🌞 Seasonal gardening tips – what to plant in July?

Summer is in full swing, the sun is warming, and the garden… isn't resting! July is a great time for a second round of planting, refreshing your flower beds, and taking care of your late summer and early fall harvest. What should you plant to ensure something else grows from this summer? And what should you do to prevent it from cooking in the heat?

Make a cold brew, put on a hat, and check out our July gardening tips 🌿☀️

🥬 Vegetables – yes, you can still do it!

July is the perfect time to sow:

  • Lettuce (various varieties) – grows quickly and you can harvest it after just 3 weeks

  • Radish – preferably in partial shade so that it doesn't shoot into the leaves

  • Spinach – the summer version tolerates heat well

  • Leaf beetroot (chard) – resistant, colorful, tasty

  • Dill and parsley – they grow like crazy in warm weather

  • Zucchini and cucumbers – if you have seedlings or good sunlight

🌿 Herbs – always welcome

If you dream of fresh basil in September, then:

  • Basil – in a pot or grow bag, needs warmth and moisture

  • Fennel – grows like a mini Christmas tree and smells phenomenal

  • Coriander, rocket, mizuna – fast-growing leafy wonders

  • Mint and lemon balm – plant them in a separate pot as they tend to spread out

🌸 Flowers? In July? Of course!

Not only vegetables – you can also sow flowers:

  • Marigolds and nasturtiums – bloom after 6 weeks, repel pests

  • Opium poppy – romantic, wild accents in the garden

  • Low sunflowers – even in a pot on the balcony

  • Cornflowers and cosmos – perfect for naturalistic flowerbeds

💧 July is also about… skincare!

  • Water wisely – in the morning or in the evening, less frequently but abundantly.

  • Mulch – with straw, bark or grass clippings to retain moisture

  • Harvest your crops – e.g. cherries, cucumbers, zucchini, beans

  • Prune faded flowers – you will prolong flowering

  • Beware of pests – summer is a party for them, but you don’t have to be invited 😉

🪴 July in a pot or on the balcony? Sure!

If you don't have a garden, that's fine. There's still plenty you can grow in grow bags, boxes, and pots. Herbs, lettuces, radishes, and even small carrots and zucchini thrive in containers—all they need is sun and water.
