Summer is ending... time to prepare your plants for fall 🍂🌱
Share
And so it happened. Summer is slowly packing up, putting on its straw hat, and waving goodbye. The days are getting shorter, the evenings are getting cooler, and instead of lemonade with ice cubes, we're more likely to crave a cup of hot ginger tea. But be warned – we're not the only ones who need to switch to "autumn" mode. Our plants – those in our apartments, on our balconies, and in our gardens – are also waiting for a little action plan.
Because if you think autumn is a time for a complete break from gardening, we have a surprise for you: now is the time to lay the foundation for your greenery to be happy and beautiful in the next season. 💚
🌿 Balcony and garden – a great farewell to summer
1. Summer stars leave the stage
Geraniums, petunias, and surfinias are still trying to pretend that "nothing happened," but the truth is that their season of great glory is coming to an end. What can you do? Prune them, remove the faded flowers, and decide which ones you want to try to overwinter, and which ones will end their summer career.
2. New autumn arrangements
This is where heather, chrysanthemums, and ornamental grasses come in – the stars of autumn, which can create a true spectacle of color on the balcony and in the garden. Imagine a balcony full of purple heather, next to it grasses waving in the wind, and a few pumpkins as decorations. Instagram is on fire. 📸
3. Tidying up pots and flowerbeds
Autumn rains are no joke – make sure your planters have drainage, otherwise plant roots can turn to silage. In the garden, remove weeds and plant debris, and dig up the soil. It's a bit like cleaning up the kitchen after a party – the better you do it now, the easier it will be to start in spring.
4. Autumn planting
Yes, autumn is a great time to plant! Trees, fruit bushes, and perennials are all taking root now. This means they'll be ready to start spring like marathon runners on a kick—full of energy and ready to grow.
🌱 Home Jungle – Cozy Mode on
1. Slow-motion watering
Houseplants also know it's getting darker and colder. Their metabolism slows, so they don't need as much water as they did in July. The rule: water less often, but be careful not to turn them into green mummies.
2. Beware of drafts
We air out our homes more often in the fall, but cold drafts are not pleasant for plants. Keep them away from open windows—otherwise, your monstera will start to look like it just returned from a winter walk without a hat. 🥶
3. Lights, more lights!
The days are getting shorter, so your plants will be desperate for sunlight. Move them closer to the windows. If you have a grow light, now is the time to pull it out of the closet. Seriously, your plants will thank you more than you thank your coffee machine for your morning coffee.
4. Overdoing it? Not yet
Fall and winter aren't the time for major pot changes. It's better to leave this until spring, when the plants will be re-energized and ready for new adventures.
🍂 Autumn DIY and the Hygge Atmosphere
Fall is also the perfect time for plant experiments. You can:
-
make a mini forest in a jar (ideal if you want a piece of greenery when it's raining outside),
-
dry flowers from the garden and create an autumn wreath,
-
decorate your balcony with pumpkins, lights and candles – because who said that only Christmas has a monopoly on lights? ✨
🌳 Garden to-do list before winter
-
Pruning – remove dead or diseased shoots.
-
Protection – cover delicate plants with agrotextile, especially if winter tends to surprise you.
-
Compost – toss leaves and plant debris into your compost bin. This green gold will reward your garden beds next year.
-
Fertilization – at this stage, choose autumn fertilizers that strengthen the roots rather than stimulate growth.
🌟 Autumn = a new beginning
Instead of treating autumn as a sad end to the season, think of it as a regeneration phase—for you and your plants. It's a time to slow down, lay the groundwork, and… enjoy the cozy atmosphere.
Imagine this: you're sitting with a cup of tea under a blanket, candles flickering around you, and your balcony and home jungle still look like a green fairy tale. Sounds good, right? 🍵🌿
